INCLUSIVE RESTROOM ADA SIGNAGE

A Non-Binary Perspective

By MacKenzie Gower

My name is MacKenzie and I am Non-Binary.

The dictionary defines, at the most basic level, that my identity “allows for degrees of being”. And for as long as I have been out I’ve had no problems with this, I’ve never been one to wait in the long “ladies” line at any establishment and was quick to call any individual out when giving me grief for using the “men’s room”, but I realize that my outlook and experience isn't the norm.

Untold numbers of individuals have to determine their personal safety based on which bathroom they walk into on a daily basis. No one wants to live in fear and so the industry has been providing the ability to raise awareness for the need and effectiveness of all gendered bathrooms.

“To those accustomed to standard public restrooms (divided by “Men” and “Women”), the idea of an all-inclusive restroom (accommodating people of all sexes and genders) might make many uncomfortable! But Carla Ramirez Sosa and Anna de Jonge (Mijksenaar USA) present their firm’s recent designs for all-gender restrooms inside Amsterdam’s Schipol International Airport based on comprehensive audience research.” – Beyond the Binary

The signage and graphics industry has the ability to set the standard when presented with massive build outs and if we incorporate all inclusive signage we can help lead our clients to the idea that IT DOESN’T MATTER!
